At a certain point in 2020, it became fashionable to include a statement of values on one’s professional website. I think we frankly had a little too much time on our hands. Though I do consider my practice to be rooted in queer and post colonial thought, that’s not why you’re here now, is it?
You’re here of figure out my whole deal.
So here we go.
I’m a transgender multi-hyphenate artist.
As an acclaimed lighting designer, I am proudest of the work I’ve done in collaboration with experimental artists including, to name a few, Peter Mills Weiss and Julia Mounsey, Taylor Mac and Matt Rey, Target Margin Theater, Mabou Mines, Diana Oh, Knud Adams, The New York City Players, Object Collection, and The Wooster Group. The last few years, I have toured the world lighting Esperanza Spalding while she and the members of Antonio Brown Dance work tirelessly to reintroduce improvised movement into the Black American social music tradition that some call Jazz.
As a New Media artist I explore emerging technology’s potential to communicate embodied biography. While a Project Number One resident artist at New York City’s Soho Rep, I wrote, designed, and developed an original VR work called Girl Mode. Girl Mode has since been shown at Soho Rep, The Brick Theater, ASU’s Mix Center, and The Fabric Arts Workshop.
As a deviser of theater, I work as a dramaturg and occasional co-director. With Peter Mills Weiss and Julia Mounsey, I was integral to the creation of a stripped down “somehow literary” set of works that have premiered in both the US and Europe.
You can read one of my poems in 53rd state press’s occasional number 3. I publish sporadic polemics at my Sub Stack, where you can find my viral article “How to Fix the American Theater.”
I am a life long, if inconsistent, activist. I’ve lived in squats and done the kinds of things we don’t talk about on the internet. I’ve also been to more marches than I can count, and made a fool of myself thinking I was doing the right thing. These days, I am a happy foot soldier in movement politics.
I crochet, bake pastries, and take photos for fun!
If if seems like we’d vibe, I’d love to make something together.
